After, in April 2020, we did a bid on this beautiful estate, our bid was actually accepted by the owner at that time. But the French notary did not accept the sale. The reason for this was that a year earlier, the mansion was already sold to another party. This party had paid the down payment but then mysteriously disappeared. Not replying to phone calls or emails. Because we were really interested, the notary made a last effort to reach the buyer and, much to everybody’s surprise, another partial payment arrived.

Eventually, the purchase to that buyer went through and even though we had already purchased a huge clock for the hallway, Linda and I focused on surviving the Covid period, a period in which no scouting activities could take place.

However I stayed in contact with the mayor of the village and when at the end of 2022 Linda was even contacted by a person she met during our 2-day visit, asking when we will come, it became clear that nobody had visited the mansion after our visit in April 2020.

The mystery therefore thickened. Not only had the buyer disappeared after he did the down-payment, but even once he became the owner, he never visited the house.

We started our search for him. Visited the previous owner, contacted the real estate agent and the notary, and even called the mayor. We ended up with his name, an address, an email address and two telephone numbers.

The search now became a hunt. We sent emails, we called him. After one month, one of the telephone numbers got disconnected but the other phone number remained active. We even send him a nice colourful pop-up card by registered mail.

The pop-up card was accepted, but none of our attempts resulted in contact with what now really became a mystery owner.

In a final attempt to find him, I decided to hire somebody in Switzerland to find him and to try to arrange a meeting between him and me. And she found him 🙂 🙂 🙂 . She visited his house, she talked to the neighbours who confirmed that he lives there and saw that his garden looks as unorganised as his communication 😉 . But he didn’t come home early that evening. She will try again later this week.

Of course, I believe that everything will move forward therefore I am preparing to travel to Switzerland to finally meet the mystery owner. But maybe he likes owning an estate that he does not use, and that will end this dream and most likely stop any summer camps for this year.
